THE DAMSEL AND THE BEAST (2020)
When researching Fauvism, I imagined a scenario with a creature, since the term translates to "wild beasts." I made this piece which has a damsel in distress archetype hiding behind a gnarled tree, while a hungry beast is on the other side, searching for her; perhaps about to strike out. It is a moment in time that involves motion, just as other Expressionists/Fauvists caught time still. German Expressionist, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and French co-founder of Fauvism, André Derain, are fearless in their use of color, which I tried to emulate. I used watercolor, oil pastel, and colored pencil.
